NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
Originally, this scene had a musical number. It was fast and snappy with a catchy hook. I have removed it from this transcript. For those interested, it was sung at the Denton Police Station, primarly by the reporters, policemen, and townspeople. Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott sang a couple lines as well. The song was called "Have You Ever Seen Such A Funny Thing?"
As Dr. Scott's car drives off - heading back to
Denton - the camera views the car as it comes towards us, and begins to
pass us. The car's headlights are bright. Quickly the light
fills the entire view point as the scene DISOLVES into the next scene:
The Criminologist's Office. The camera pulls back from the bright
lightbulb screwed into a lamp. Helen, the maid, has her feet up on
the desk. She sees us looking at her and lowers her feet to the floor,
embarrassed. She sits up straight, and takes the cigarette out of
her mouth.
"Well, needless to say, when the three of them
arrived in Denton, everyone laughed at their story of transvestite aliens,
and laser guns," Alice said, as she put out her cigarette in an ashtray.
"I mean, wouldn't you laugh if you heard such a story? Even the police
went to the site where the castle alledgedly sat and found nothing.
Supposedly, the FBI was called in, and I heard that they didn't even find
anything. So Brad and Janet pretty much became laughing stocks in
Denton. The event was labeled nothing but a fun story...a legend."
As Alice was talking, she began to flip through
a stack of photographs on the desk. The last one, a close-up of Brad's
flat tire, caught her eye and she stopped talking. The camera closes
in on the flat tire photo, and the scene disolves once again into a NEW
scene:
It is now daylight, morning to be more specifically:
possibly 11:00 a.m. The camera pulls away from Brad's flat tire,
and we see his car is at a garage. A mechanic guides it into the
garage so that the flat tire can be repaired...
Brad looks over at the mechanic, whose name tag reads
KIRK. Brad has seen Kirk before, as the town of Denton is very small.
Everybody knows everybody, it seems. Kirk approached Brad and said,
"It's gonna be about a half hour. I got another car before you.
You want a cup of coffee?"
"No, thank you, though," Brad answered.
Kirk smiled, "Well, your loss. My ex-wife
says I make the best coffee in Denton. Maybe I oughta go into the
business? What do you think?"
Brad laughed, and then noticed that Kirk seemed
uncomfortable. Brad couldn't imagine why Kirk would be uncomfortable
around him. They've known each other for a long time. Kirk
looked away, nervously, as though he were trying not to look at Brad.
There was an uncomfortable silence between the two of them.
Suddenly, Brad realized why there was discomfort:
although Brad was wrapped tightly underneith a wool blanket, hiding the
female undergament he was wearing, his feet were still exposed. Brad
looked down at his feet and saw he was still wearing fishnet stockings,
tattered and torn as they were. Brad was embarrassed.
"Look," Brad said nervously, "I can explain..."
Kirk faced his palm out and said politely, "No,
don't worry about it. There are some things I just don't need to
know."
"Thanks."
Kirk turned and headed back into the garage, yelling
behind him, "I'll have your car ready in a jiffy."
Brad smiled and then turned around. He now
faced a police car, and Vance Parker was getting into it.
Vance yelled to Brad, "Okay, buddy, time to go.
Ready?"
Brad nodded with a smile of gratitude as he got
into the police car. He kept the wool blanket wrapped around him
tightly to avoid any outside peek at his under garments. Even Vance
Parker was polite enough not to make his staring obvious.
Yet still, as they drove to the police station,
Brad looked out the window and noticed town people staring at him, pointing,
and whispering. He wondered if the same thing were happening to Janet
at that moment.
Vance spoke first, "Well, Brad, looks like you got
some explaining to do. Janet and Dr. Scott are already at the station.
I got a small fill on their take on the story, and it sounds pretty bizzare
to me."
Brad didn't know what to say. He mumbled,
"Yeah...bizzare."
Vance said, "You know, I don't believe any of that
alien stuff. I figure it's something kinky...or illegal."
Brad was quiet still.
Vance continued, "You wanna tell me the truth before
we there? I won't tell anyone."
Brad refused to answer. He didn't need anymore
gossip and finger pointing. He remained quiet the entire trip there.
When Brad entered the police station, he was joined
by Janet, who was also wrapped up in a wool blanket. He could see
small glimpses of her fishnets and black panties as she approached him.
People surrounded them, asking questions: reporters, town people and so-called
friends. Brad and Janet ignored their questioning, never taking their
eyes off each other. They met and embraced in a long hug.
"Oh Brad," Janet said, worried, "Nobody believes
us. What are we gonna do?"
Brad didn't have an answer. He continued to
hold her. In the background, people were drawing conclusions and
mumbling hateful things, such as "I heard they went to an orgy."
"Look at her eyes. I swear she's on drugs." "I heard he has
sex with a man...an alien." "Mexicans." "Same thing."
"She looks like a slut." "He looks better in fishnets than she does."
Brad and Janet ignored their comments, and turned
to face Dr. Scott who was approaching them. He was in a wheelchair,
coming from the interrigation room. He, too, had a wool blanket wrapped
around him, hiding the female under garments.
Janet bent over to hug Dr. Scott, saying, "You can't
walk anymore?"
He answered, "No. Whatever it was, it isn't
working anymore. I'm back in this wheelchair. Not as good as
the original but it will have to do."
Brad knelt down to Dr. Scott, "What did they ask
you in there? I'm next."
Dr. Scott looked disgusted, "They treated me like
I was lying. They pretty much laughed at me."
Janet said, "Listen, I've got to go. My parents
just walked in the door. Call me at home, Brad. I love you."
Janet's mother and father, Emily and Harry, approached.
While mom, was caring, Dad seemed angry.
Emily held her arms to hug her daughter, saying,
"There there, baby. It's gonna be alright. Mommy'll take care
of you. Come to the car, I've brought you a change of clothing.
A little something I saw in the window yesterday..."
As Janet and her parents left the police station,
her father stated, "What you need, Janet, is a real man!"
Dr. Scott saw Brad's worried face as he watched
Janet leave. Dr. Scott reached out and grabbed Brad's hand in comfort,
and then told him, "Do yourself a favor, Brad. Hell, do us all a
favor."
"What?"
"After you give your statement, just forget about
it. Forget it all! Pretend it never happened. I got a
little word that the FBI wants us to forget it - and quite honestly, I
think it's the best thing for Janet. She's not strong, like you and
I."
Suddenly, another police officer approached Brad
and Dr. Scott, having come from the interrigation room. He said to
Brad, "Are you Brad Majors?"
"Yes."
"Come this way, please."
That night, Janet sat at her vanity in her bedroom.
She stared into the mirror, combing her hair. She had a look of sadness
on her face. Nothing felt right. She stopped brushing and stared
out, apparently in deep thought.
KNOCK, KNOCK!!
Her mother was on the other side of the bedroom
door. She was wiggling the door handle.
"Honey," Janet's mother said, "Why did you leave
supper early? Why is the door locked? Are you okay?"
Janet responded, "I'm fine mother. Don't worry
about me."
"But, honey, I'm your mother. I have to worry."
"Mom, I'm fine. Really. Why don't you
go on to bed? It's getting late."
"Okay, honey, but please: come to me, if you need
to."
"I will, mom. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Janet listened as her mother walked down the hallway
and joined her father in bed. She heard her father mumble something
incoherant and then there was nothing but silence....until:
TAP, TAP.
Janet turned to her bedroom window. Against
the black night, she could see Brad standing at her bedroom window.
She thought he looked handsome.
She went to the window and opened it. She
whispered to him, "Brad, I'm so glad you're here. Come in.
But be quiet. I don't want to wake my parents."
"I'll be quiet," Brad whispered, "I promise."
She shut the window once he was inside, and said,
"My father would kill you if he knew you were in my bedroom."
"I had to see you," he said, holding her.
After hugging him, she pulled away to stare at his
face. He seemed as sad and lonely as she was.
Janet spoke first, after a bit of silence.
"Brad, I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For sleeping with..." But she couldn't finish
the sentence. She couldn't say "...Rocky and Frank."
Brad put his index finger to her lips, saying,
"Shhh, it's okay. I'm sorry, too."
"But Brad, I was saving myself. For you.
For our honeymoon."
"Let's just pretend it didn't happen."
"I can't," Janet said, "I feel I've betrayed you.
I wanted to give myself over to you!"
She hugged him again, and this time for a long time.
Brad carressed her hair. She slid her fingers down his backside.
Something seemed right in the midst of all this trouble: they longed for
each other. Was it a chance to make it right? To offer each
other the one thing they meant to save for each other but had given away?
Without thinking, they pulled apart, and their lips
met in a passionate embrace. They couldn't stop kissing. They
sat on the edge of the bed, kissing, as their hands carressed each other's
bodies. Brad laid Janet on the top mattress and continued to kiss
her mouth...her neck...her breasts.
Janet suddenly pushed Brad away.
"What?" he said, "What's wrong?"
"This has got to be the only time," Janet demanded
quietly, "until our honeymoon, that is."
"I love you."
"I love you."
Afterwards, Brad crawled out of the window, and headed
home. He seemed so happy. And when she thought about it, Janet
was happy too. She rested her arms on the window ledge and watched
him get into his car, which was parked down the street. As he drove
away, he extended his arm in a loving goodbye manner.
Janet smiled. She was in love again, and it
seemed as though the previous night had all been a dream.
Suddenly she looked up high into the sky - staring
at the many well-lit stars in the night.
She couldn't help but think that somewhere up there,
amongst the stars, was a spaceship, the shape of a Victorian castle, heading
home to another planet in another galaxy.
For the next 10 minutes, all Janet could do was
look at those stars.
IN CHAPTER THREE: Riff Raff and Magenta are heading home. Unfortunately, there's a small problem...
