If this project were done, I'd suggest finding a new director (Randal Kleiser? John Landis?); the previous film was not nearly as visually exciting as the stage version, though it could have been.  There is a modest but loyal audience for this film, and the first draft shows enough promise (though little polish as yet) to make the project worth pursuing.
